Industrial Sewing Machine

What is an industrial sewing machine?

What is an industrial sewing machine?

An industrial sewing machine is a versatile, heavy-duty piece of equipment that can produce high-quality products at fast speeds. Home sewing machines can sew a few hundred stitches a minute at most, whereas industrial sewing machines can easily sew thousands of stitches a minute.

However, unlike home machines that come with a variety of pre-programmed stitches, industrial sewing machines are specialized to sew only one stitch to maximize the machine’s longevity.

In this buyer's guide, we will take you through the different types of industrial sewing machines available at Ricoma – including how they are used as well as highlighting some of the different features each machine offers.

Lockstitch

Lockstitch

Lockstitch

The straight stitch, or lockstitch, is the most common stitch type used to make garments. It’s created by interlocking the top thread of the machine with the bobbin thread. Although it's a basic stitch, it's extremely versatile and can be used to sew virtually any garment or item out of any non-stretch fabric.

If you are looking to start or expand your current sewing business, you can’t go wrong with the versatility of a lockstitch machine.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that the types of fabrics you use and the types of items you want to sew will also affect the type of lockstitch machine you’ll need. For example, Ricoma sells light to heavy-duty industrial lockstitch machines to suit the needs of all of our customers.

Light-to-Medium Duty Lockstitch Machines

Light-to-medium duty machines are used for light-to-medium weight fabrics like cotton, t-shirt fabrics, denim, polyester and some knit fabrics. You can see the light-to-medium machines Ricoma carries and their features in the section below:

iKonix Flat-Bed Lockstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-8700B

The KS-8700B offers many of the same convenient features as the KS-8700 along with a few state-of-the-art upgrades.

This new and improved industrial sewing machine has a built-in single-phase 110V direct-drive motor instead of an external servo motor. This motor comes with advanced energy-saving features and makes the KS-8700B far quieter than other sewing machines on the market.

Additionally, the KS-8700B also comes with a convenient automatic bobbin winder system that allows you to reload empty bobbin spools, as well as a manual needle control that lets you stop and engage your needle with just the press of a button. Its full library of preset program also gives users greater control when sewing their garments.

And, with a top speed of 5,000 stitches per minute, this machine will allow you to easily outpace your competitors.

iKonix Flat-Bed Lockstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-8700B

iKonix Flat-Bed Lockstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-8700
iKonix Flat-Bed Lockstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-8700

The iKonix Flat-Bed Lockstitch Industrial Sewing Machine is a single-needle machine that can reach speeds of 5,500 stitches per minute. The KS-8700 also boasts an advanced noise-decreasing device to help reduce noise coming from the machine's external servo motor, allowing for quieter operation in spite of its lightning fast-speed.

You can also adjust the stitch length on this machine from 1 to 5 mm to accommodate the fabric and item you are sewing. Additionally, its drop-feed mechanism and feed dogs help you feed the material easily and evenly under the needle to help control the stitch’s direction and length. This machine also has a high presser foot clearance of 13mm, so you can fit and easily maneuver even bulky items under the machine’s foot.

iKonix Flat-Bed Lockstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-8700

Finally, the KS-8700 has an automatic lubrication system that keeps it lubricated at all times. This saves you time as you won’t need to constantly oil your machine for it to run smoothly.

Yamata Double-Needle Lockstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - FY875

As the name suggests, the Yamata Double-Needle Lockstitch Sewing Machine has two needles, which means it can create two parallel straight stitches at a time instead of just one. The FY875 can only sew at speeds of 3,000 stitches per minute, which is fast but not as fast as the single-needle machines in the light-to-medium duty category.

One of the most valuable features of the FY875 is its separate needle bar that allows you to operate the machine as either a single or double-needle machine. So, if you have a project that requires one needle, you won’t need to switch to a completely different sewing machine to complete it.

Yamata Double-Needle Lockstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - FY875
Yamata Double-Needle Lockstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - FY875

Finally, the FY875 has an adjustable stitch length between 1 mm to 7 mm, which allows you to switch between shorter and stronger seams to longer and looser seams, depending on the project and material.

Medium-to-Heavy Duty Lockstitch Machines

Medium-to-heavy duty lockstitch machines deal with heavier fabrics like leather and canvas. Below are the machines Ricoma carries.

iKonix Cylinder-Bed Lockstitch Sewing Machine - KS-335A

The iKonix Cylinder-Bed Lockstitch Sewing Machine is a compound feed lockstitch sewing machine that allows you to easily sew tubular items like cuffs, shoes, bags, hats and more. With the KS-335A's narrow cylindrical arm, you can sew hard-to-reach areas and rounded items.

In addition to the cylindrical arm, this machine has a compound feed walking foot. This mechanism makes sewing thick items or multiple layers of fabric effortless by allowing the needle to move in unison with the feed dogs to grip the material and pull it evenly through the machine. This feature makes the KS-335A perfect for sewing multiple layers because it prevents the layers from shifting and creating distorted stitches or puckering.

This machine has a presser foot height of 13 mm and a walking foot, both of which allow you to sew bulky items. When it comes to stitching, it has an adjustable stitch length between 1 and 6.5 mm and a reverse stitching feature so you can back-stitch and secure your seams.

The KS-335A also has a larger bobbin capacity, so you won't have to replace your bobbins as often.

iKonix Cylinder-Bed Lockstitch Sewing Machine - KS-335A
iKonix Cylinder-Bed Lockstitch Sewing Machine - KS-335A
iKonix Walking Foot Flat-Bed Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-0303

The iKonix Walking Foot Flat-Bed Industrial Sewing Machine is ideal for sewing thick items like leather, canvas and bags. Its walking foot is a unique feature that makes sewing thick items or multiple layers of fabric easier. A walking foot has small grooves on the underside that helps it sandwich the fabric between the foot and feed dogs so that none of the fabric layers slip while sewing.

This machine has a high presser foot height of 15 mm along with a walking foot to help you sew thick fabrics and bulky bags. The KS-0303 also has an adjustable stitch length that can be as long as 9 mm, which allows you to change the length depending on the item you are sewing.

iKonix Walking Foot Flat-Bed Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-0303

Lastly, the KS-0303 has an automatic oiling system that keeps the machine lubricated at all times ,which keeps it running smoothly no matter how frequently you use it.

Heavy-Duty Lockstitch Machines

iKonix Single-Needle Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-810

The iKonix Single Needle Post-Bed Sewing Machine is ideal for sewing shoes, bags, hats and more. It has a 7-inch raised column that allows you to sew bulky, non-flat items that would be more difficult to sew on flat-bed machines.

In addition to its raised column, the KS-810’s roller foot helps you sew thick material like leather. With its high clearance presser foot and its roller feed, you can feed thick fabrics evenly under the needle. You can even switch out the roller foot for a flat presser foot to sew thinner garments.

iKonix Single-Needle Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-810
iKonix Single-Needle Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-810

The iKonix Single Needle Post-Bed Sewing Machine also allows you to reverse-stitch, or back-stitch, to reinforce your seams. You can also adjust the stitch length between 1 and 5mm to best suit the type of material you are sewing with.

Along with these fantastic features, the KS-810 has a rotary hook that vibrates less, even at the machine’s maximum speed of 2,500 stitches per minute, allowing for smoother and quieter sewing.

iKonix Single-Needle Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-810W

The KS-810W is the same as the KS-810 mentioned above, except it comes with a wig attachment that makes creating wigs easier than ever. This machine’s dome-shaped attachment holds the wig up properly and allows you to feed the wig cap under the needle effortlessly.

You can make lace front wigs, monofilament wigs, full lace wigs and many other types of wigs faster and more efficiently with this machine than with a regular flat-bed sewing machine.

iKonix Single-Needle Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-810W
iKonix Single-Needle Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-810W
iKonix Double-Needle Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-820

The iKonix Double-Needle Industrial Sewing Machine is similar to the post-bed machines mentioned above, except it has two needles instead of one. Because it has two needles, the KS-820 can create two rows of parallel stitches without having to run the fabric through the machine twice.

Having two needles will allow you to finish projects faster and give them a professional finish. Leather goods like wallets, shoes and belts look even better with the two parallel stitches from this machine.

iKonix Double-Needle Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-820
iKonix Double-Needle Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-820

Like the previous iKonix post-bed machines, the KS-820 has a 7-inch raised column that allows you to sew bulky, non-flat items easily. It also has a heavy roller foot that helps you sew thicker materials evenly. Additionally, you can reverse-stitch on this machine, as well as adjust the stitch length from 1 to 5 mm and sew at a maximum speed of 2,500 stitches per minute.

iKonix Heavy Duty Single-Needle Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-5618

The iKonix Heavy Duty Single-Needle Industrial Sewing Machineis specially designed to sew heavy-duty items like upholstery, sportswear, car cushions, luggage, bags and more. This machine uses a walking foot, or unison foot, making sewing thick upholstery much easier.

The walking foot and needle bar move in unison with the feed dogs to grip the fabric and pull it evenly through the machine. This feature makes the KS-5618 perfect for sewing multiple layers because it prevents the layers from shifting and creating distorted stitches and puckering.

iKonix Heavy Duty Single-Needle Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-5618
iKonix Heavy Duty Single-Needle Industrial Sewing Machine - KS-5618

Along with a walking foot, this machine has a high presser foot height of 14 mm, which allows you to sew even the bulkiest and thickest of items. The KS-5618 also has an adjustable stitch length that can be as long as 8 mm.

Additionally, you can reverse stitch over your previous stitches to reinforce your seams. Lastly, this machine has a large bobbin capacity, so you won't need to replace your bobbin thread frequently while working on large projects.

Zigzag Lockstitch Machines

Some lockstitch machines can also sew zigzag stitches because they are created the same way straight stitches are, so they have very similar mechanics. The zigzag machine Ricoma offers is the FY457-125L ,which is also known as Yamata High-Speed Zigzag Industrial Sewing Machine.

Zigzag stitches are great for fixing tears, hemming, attaching fabrics, enclosing fabric edges and creating decorative stitching. These stitches are also useful for sewing stretchy fabrics because they won’t cause puckering like straight stitches. This machine can easily sew zigzag stitches for any application.

Zigzag Lockstitch Machines - The FY457-125L

The FY457-125L has a maximum speed of 5,000 stitches per minute. You can also adjust the stitch length and width without affecting the speed. Another stitching feature of this machine is the reverse stitching lever on the side that allows you to back-stitch when you pull on it.

Lastly, but not least, this Yamata zigzag machine has an automatic lubrication system that ensures your machine will always run smoothly.

Overlock Machine

Overlock machines, are used to sew over the edge of one or multiple pieces of fabric to create a hem, seam or clean edge. This stitch is done by using multiple looper threads from thread cones on top of the machine (rather than a bobbin) and passing the threads over the raw edges of the fabric over and over to keep them in one clean seam.

The greatest advantage of on overlock machine is that it sews, hems and cuts the excess fabric in just one step to create a clean finish. With other machines, these are all separate steps in the process, but an overlock machine can accomplish all of these tasks at once.

They are especially useful when sewing stretchy fabrics like those used for t-shirts, sweaters or undergarments because overlock stitches have no problem stretching and moving with the fabric.

If you plan to create a wide variety of sewn items out of stretch and non-stretch fabrics and you want them to have a clean, professional finish, an overlock machine is the way to go.

Ricoma sells a few overlock machines ranging from 3-thread to 5-thread machines, as they need multiple looping threads to create secure stitches. Here’s a brief overview of each of them.

Yamata High-Speed Four-Thread Industrial Sewing Machine - FY747A

The Yamata high-speed four-thread industrial overlock sewing machine uses four threads to create a secure overlock stitch on light-to-medium weight fabrics. Like the three-thread Yamata machine previously mentioned, this machine can sew up to 6,000 stitches a minute and has an automatic lubrication system.

Yamata High-Speed Four-Thread Industrial Sewing Machine - FY747A
iKonix High-Speed Five-Thread Overlock Industrial Sewing Machine KS-757A

The iKonix high-speed five-thread industrial overlock machine offers the most looping threads out of all our serger overlock. With 5 threads to work with, you’ll have added security on all your seams and be able to create items from almost any light or medium-weight fabric.

iKonix High-Speed Five-Thread Overlock Industrial Sewing Machine KS-757A

Like the Yamata models above, this machine can sew up to 6,000 stitches a minute and has automatic lubrication for easy maintenance. As an added bonus, it comes with a fully submergible table that allows you to move the machine up and down, making it easier and more comfortable for you to sew for long periods of time.

Yamata High-Speed Three-Thread Industrial Sewing Machine - FY2100-3

The Yamata industrial overlock machine that uses three threads to create seams, but with slightly different features. This machine can handle light-to-medium weight fabrics, but it has a maximum speed of 6,500 stitches per minute. However, it doesn’t have an automatic lubrication system.

Yamata High-Speed Three-Thread Industrial Sewing Machine - FY2100-3
Yamata Multi-Function Overlock Domestic Sewing Machine - FY14U4AD

The Yamata multi-function overlock domestic sewing machine sews light-to-medium duty materials. It has four available thread loopers, but you can choose to use either three or four threads at a time depending on the project you are working on. It comes with an internal motor and doesn’t require a specialized sewing table, so you can use it anywhere.

Yamata Multi-Function Overlock Domestic Sewing Machine - FY14U4AD

The FY-14U4AD also has adjustable stitch length and width options and adjustable differential feed. This means you can adjust the speed at which you feed your fabric through the feed dog, which is the mechanism under your sewing machine foot that moves your fabric forward as you sew. With this feature, you can either speed up your feed to gather your fabric and create ruffles or slow down your feed to prevent puckering.

However, this machine doesn't have the power to stitch at high speeds, as it can only sew at 800 stitches per minute. This makes it more suitable for beginners or professional sewers who need an overlock model that is easy to transport.

Chainstitch

Chainstitches are created by looping thread back in on itself over and over again, resulting in a stitch that looks a lot like a chain. Because a chain stitch loops in on itself, chainstitch machines do not require bobbin thread to sew, which makes operating them very simple. Chainstitches are most often used to create decorative seams on pant and shirt hems, as well as on bedding and leather goods.

If you are looking for a machine that can help you add flair to garments, then a chainstitch machine is right for you.

Ricoma offers two light-to-medium weight chainstitch machines, the Yamata Single-Needle Chainstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - FY0058A-1 and the Yamata Double-Needle Chainstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - FY0058A-2. These machines function the same, but the only difference is that the FY0058A-1 is a single-needle chainstitch machine and the FY0058A-2 is a two-needle chainstitch machine.

Yamata Single-Needle Chainstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - FY0058A-1

The FY0058A-1 is a high-speed single-needle chainstitch industrial sewing machine that is perfect for sewing decorative seams onto items like pant hems, shirt sleeves, bedding, leather goods, and much more. Chain stitches are created by looping the thread back on itself, resulting in a strong seam and a roping effect that looks great on all types of garments and fabrics. Additionally, the FY0058A-1 has an adjustable stitch length between 1 mm and 4 mm, so you can switch between shorter and stronger seams to longer and looser seams, depending on the project and material.

Along with its chain stitch capabilities, the machine’s top speed of 5,500 revolutions per minute will help you finish projects quickly and faster than your competitors. This will increase your efficiency and potentially your revenue. Finally, the durable and long-lasting industrial sewing machine is made of high-quality steel, which means it can handle your daily wear and tear.

Yamata Single-Needle Chainstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - FY0058A-1
Yamata Single-Needle Chainstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - FY0058A-1
Yamata Double-Needle Chainstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - FY0058A-2

Chain stitches are created by looping the thread back on itself, resulting in a strong seam and a roping effect that looks great on all types of garments and fabrics. What’s unique about this machine is that it creates two lines of chain stitches instead of just one. This saves you a lot of time compared to other sewing machines because you don’t have to run the fabric through the machine twice just to sew another row of chain stitches.

Bar Tack Machine

Bar tack stitches are used to reinforce areas of major stress on a garment using a series of tight-knit zigzag stitches. Bar tacks are most often used on buttonholes, belt loops, the bottom of zippers, pocket openings and the tops of pleats.

If you plan on making pants, jeans, suits, uniforms or any formal wear that has a lot of stiff, high-stress areas, a bar tack machine is a must-have to ensure your garments are sturdy, durable and high-quality.

Yamata High-Speed Single-Needle Bar Tacking Industrial Sewing Machine - FY1850

Do you alter a lot of thin garments like pleated skirts or dress shirts?

Then the FY1850 is the perfect industrial sewing machine for your alterations business.

The FY1850 is a 28-bar tack high-speed sewing machine. This easy-to-use machine can sew up to 1,800 stitches per minute and has a presser foot clearance of 17 mm to allow for alterations on bulkier items.

Along with an automatic thread trimmer to help you save time cutting excess threads after every tack, the FY1850 also comes with a table, stand, and servo motor.

Yamata High-Speed Single-Needle Bar Tacking Industrial Sewing Machine - FY1850
Yamata High-Speed Single-Needle Bar Tacking Industrial Sewing Machine - FY1850-2

If you regularly alter jeans or denim jackets, then the FY1850-2 is the machine for you.

Like the FY1850, the FY1850-2 can sew up to 1,800 stitches per minute and has a presser foot clearance of 17 mm – allowing you to sew bulky fabrics and items with ease.

Unlike the FY1850, however, the FY1850-2 can also sew 42 bar tack stitches at a time – making it the perfect tool for altering high-quality denim jeans, skirts and jackets.

Additionally, you can easily adjust the stitch width and length on both of these bar tack machines so you can pick the perfect sized stitch for every project.

The FY1850-2 also comes with an automatic thread trimmer – so you don’t waste time cutting the excess thread after every tack – as well as a table, stand, and servo motor.

Coverstitch

A coverstitch is a very common stitch used in industrial sewing, especially to finish hems or add a trim to stretchy garments. This stitch is often used to finish necklines and hems on t-shirts, sweaters, bathing suits, sportswear and any other garments made from stretchy fabrics like fleece, spandex or lycra.

Coverstitches look like two parallel rows of straight stitches on the top side of the fabric and an overlock stitch on the inside of the garment, which is why only machines with two needles or more can create this stitch. You can see it for yourself if you are wearing a t-shirt, as the neckline is almost certainly made by joining two pieces of fabric with a coverstitch.

Because it creates a zigzag or serger-like stitch on the inside of the fabric, a coverstitch allows the fabric to maintain its stretch along the seams so that it fits properly without restricting the movement of the fabric or the user.

If you plan to create a majority of your garments out of stretchy fabrics like t-shirt material, lycra or knits and want to maintain a professional look, an industrial coverstitch machine is a great option.

Yamata High-Speed Coverstitch Industrial Sewing Machine - FY2500-01CB

The FY2500-01CB is Ricoma’s light-to-medium weight industrial coverstitch machine. In addition to sewing impeccable coverstitches, this machine can also be used to sew on lace trims to stretchy fabrics or intimate wear to add extra details that will make your garments stand out.

Another great feature of this machine is that it has an adjustable differential feed. This means you can adjust the speed at which you feed your fabric through the machine’s feed dog, which is the mechanism under your sewing machine foot that moves your fabric forward as you sew. This is a useful and unique feature not found on many other machines. The adjustable differential feed can help you create ruffles by slowing down your feed, or ensure that there is no puckering in your fabric by speeding up your feed.

Yamata High-Speed Coverstitch Industrial Sewing Machine -FY2500-01CB
Yamata High-Speed Coverstitch Industrial Sewing Machine -FY2500-01CB

The FY2500-01CB can sew at 6,000 stitches per minute, but it's not very loud thanks to Ricoma’s servo motor. You can comfortably sew at high speeds with minimal vibrations and without worrying about disturbing your neighbors. This machine also has an automatic oiling system, which makes maintenance a breeze. It comes with a table, stand, and servo motor.

Blindstitch

A blindstitch is created when you join two pieces of fabric in a way where the thread doesn't show on the top or outer side of the fabric. This is done by the needle picking up as little fabric as possible on every pass to limit how much thread shows through the fabric.

A blindstitch is often used when you do not want a seam to show on your garment, like when sewing a hem. Because you can barely see blindstitches, they give a professional look to clothing when used to finish off the hem of dresses, skirts, pants, shirt cuffs and more. They can also be used to give intimate garments a cleaner finish and to join pockets, trims and other clothing accents seamlessly.

If you are in the business of altering clothing or doing a lot of finishing, like hems and trims, an industrial blindstitch machine is the perfect fit for you.

iKonix Portable Desktop Blindstitch Sewing Machine - KS-500

The iKonix Portable Desktop Blindstitch Sewing Machine is made for light to medium weighted fabric and can run as fast as 1,200 stitches per minute. Best of all, it's very light and portable for an industrial machine. This is because it has a built-in 110V motor and doesn't need its own table to sew garments, making it easy to take and set up anywhere. You can also adjust the stitch length up to 7 mm, which allows you to switch between shorter and stronger seams to longer and looser seams, depending on the project and material.

Conclusion

As you navigate the industrial sewing machine market, this guide can help you to determine which machine is right for you and your business. There are many factors to consider, from what kind of specialty stitch you’re looking for, to what features will be most useful to you. Assessing the kinds of garments and materials you’ll be sewing is a good first step to take when deciding which machine to buy. If you’re mostly embroidering light-to-medium materials like cotton, polyester and denim, you’ll want a light-to-medium machine. If you’re sewing heavier materials like leather and canvas, you should look into a medium-to-heavy duty machine. Then, you can further narrow down your choices by deciding what kind of stitching you’re interested in, whether it’s a lockstitch, chainstitch, overlock stitch, or one of the many other options available.

You can’t go wrong with any of these machines, and many businesses will choose to invest in more than one to accommodate different stitch types and desired features. Use this guide to help you to identify what you’re looking for, and which machine will best suit your needs.

Happy sewing!
